I just learned of the death of Marilyn Gaull—news in the academic world travels slowly!—and I was saddened to hear that she was gone, because she was such a wonderful editor and scholar, and bold, too, in starting one of the best journals in English Studies. She was also enthusiastic and encouraging about my work—much appreciated, especially at the time she gave it, not knowing my circumstances—and of course, she published an article of mine, which I still regard as my most important, “The New Cosmology in Romantic Poetry.” She belonged to the old tradition of the academy as not just the place of learning, but the place of sociability and community—the good tradition, and the tradition that is sadly weakened today.

Saying goodby to you was the hardest thing I ever had to do. It's so hard to let go the person who saw me come into the world and heard my first cry. It doesn't feel real that you're gone but I'm so thankful you're out of pain and finally home! I'll hold on to the memories of you singing to me "I love you a bushel and a peck." Every time I needed you, you were there, all the talks, playing Boggle, cleaning up the kitchen after dinner together, laughing so hard and just so many memories! You bought me my first Bible and you and pop played such an important role in my knowing about Jesus Christ and because of that I've been a believer for 36yrs! I loved the way you would call me "my heather" and at the end when you were so weak but still brought your hand to my cheek and told me you loved me. I'll love you forever!!
